Frequently Asked Questions About Times Tables Practice

What age should children start practising their times tables?

Children usually begin learning multiplication in Key Stage 1, but regular times tables practice becomes particularly important during Key Stage 2. By Year 4, children in England are expected to know their multiplication tables up to 12 ร— 12 in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check.

Every child learns at a different pace, so don’t worry if your child needs a little extra practice. Short, regular sessions are often more useful than trying to learn everything in one go.

What is the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check?

The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a short online assessment taken by children in England during the summer term of Year 4.

Children are asked 25 multiplication questions, covering times tables up to 12 ร— 12. They have six seconds to answer each question, so being able to recall multiplication facts quickly is important.

Robbie is in Year 4 at the moment, so this is something we’ve been working on together at home. We regularly do little times tables tests as part of his evening homework, and I’ve genuinely noticed how much his confidence and recall have improved with regular practice.

That’s one of the reasons I wanted to put these free times tables resources together. A little practice each day can make a real difference!

Which times tables should children learn first?

The 2, 5 and 10 times tables are usually good places to start because they have simple, recognisable patterns. Once children are comfortable with those, they can move on to the 3, 4 and 6 times tables before tackling the more challenging ones.

It’s also worth revisiting tables your child has already learned. Mixing different questions together helps children move away from simply remembering a sequence and towards recalling the answers independently.

Our interactive times tables quiz lets children practise individual tables or have a go at mixed questions from 2 to 12.

How can I help a child who struggles with their times tables?

The trick is to keep practice short, regular and as enjoyable as possible. Trying to force a child through a huge worksheet when they’re already losing interest probably won’t help!

Here are a few things worth trying:

  • Start with just one times table rather than mixing everything together.
  • Use short online quizzes to make practice feel more like a game.
  • Try printable times tables worksheets for a break from screens.
  • Revisit questions they get wrong instead of simply moving on.
  • Praise progress and effort, not just the number of correct answers.

We’ve found that doing a little times tables practice together each evening works well for Robbie. He doesn’t get everything right first time, but seeing the same questions crop up regularly has helped him become much more confident.

Are these times tables worksheets free to print?

Yes! All the times tables worksheets on this page are free to download and print. There are different levels of difficulty, so you can choose a multiplication test that’s suitable for your child’s current ability.

Each printable is designed to give children some extra multiplication practice away from a screen. They’re useful for homework, quick revision sessions or simply keeping those times tables fresh.

You can also use the interactive quiz and Balloon Pop game on this page for a different way to practise.
